Dental Assistant
Hi, I'm Makenna! I have been working at Hartstone Dental since October 2024. You will find me assisting both Dr. Joel and Dr. Jon with various procedures. Being new to the dental field, I've enjoyed learning about all the procedures and patient care. My top priority while working with our patients is making our patients feel comfortable in the chair. My favorite part of my job is helping patients feel good about their smile and helping patients in any way I can to help them maintain their dental health. I am thankful to be a part of a team that not only works well together, but enjoys working together!
Outside of the office, I like to do a variety of activities such as fishing, bow hunting, traveling, camping and the list goes on! Overall, I enjoy everything the outdoors has to offer! I also spend time playing with my two dogs, Oakley and Harley. During the summer months, you will hear me talking about Pickleball, which is another favortie hobby of mine! When I talk about traveling, you will hear me talking about going either as close as Eagle River, or as far as Colorado. I'm always open to going somewhere new!

Hi, my name is Crystal. I was Dr. Brad’s assistant for more than 15 years now I'm assisting Dr. Jon Szewczyk. Working with patients to keep them relaxed and comfortable during their visits is my main goal. I love to help ease their nerves by keeping them laughing, and make sure they feel confident with their smile when they leave our chair. I am also responsible for our OSHA and CPR training at the office, to keep our staff up to date with the latest medical and safety trainings.
When I’m not at the office, you find me with my husband Josh, and our two kids, Carter and Violet. We keep busy doing things like camping and boating, and you can also find us chasing our seven chickens and rooster around our yard. I love staying active and participate in many charity and fun runs. Sometimes I convince my coworkers to join me in those runs, especially the annual Crazylegs Classic run in Madison every spring.

Hi, I’m Mindy. I went to MATC and graduated from the Dental Assisting Program in May 2008. I have been working at Hartstone Dental since 2009. For the past 15 years, I was assisting both doctors with various procedures and now you'll find me assisting Dr. Joel Hartjes. The best part of my job is being able to help the doctors maintain and create beautiful smiles. Working at Hartstone has brought me career fulfillment as well as many great friends.
When I’m not at the office, you can find me with my husband Mike, daughter Autumn, stepson Ashton, and our two dogs Mocha and Moose. I am a Badger sports fan, enjoy being outdoors as much as I can and love a good book. In the spring and summer, I look forward to planting in my garden and spending time at my parent's camper at Merry Mac Campground. During the winter months, I enjoy attending meat raffles with my coworkers.

Hi, I’m Kari, and I have been a dental hygienist at Hartstone Dental since 2004. I pride myself on providing my patients a thorough and gentle cleaning, as well as teaching them proper care management for their smiles. It is important to me that I help my patients take great care of their teeth, and through the years, I have been able to get to know them as well as watch many of their children grow up. Working at Hartstone has given me the chance to work with amazing co-workers that make me excited to go to work.
When I’m not at the office, you can find me on my “funny” farm with my husband Scott, our two boys Austin and Carson, six chickens, six horses, three goats, and three dogs. When we aren’t running around on our farm, you can find us camping and doing trail rides as a family. I love watching comedy movies because laughing is one of my favorite things to do.

Hi. I’m Laura, one of the dental hygienists at Hartstone Dental. I have been working in my field for a decade and at Hartstone Dental since 2010. One of the most enjoyable parts of my job is being able to ease patients’ fears about dentistry, and help them to actually enjoy their visits with us. You can find me providing dental cleanings for adults and children, as well as treatments for our periodontal patients. Through my years at Hartstone Dental, I find myself happy that I have developed such strong relationships with our patients and my co-workers. The patient-first and prevention focus of Hartstone Dental (Hartjes Dental) reminds me of why I chose dental hygiene as my profession. Through Hartstone Dental, I have been able to participate in the Touched Twice Dental Clinics, which allows us to help people who otherwise might not be able to receive dental care.
>When I’m not busy at the office, you can find me doing things like boating and fishing with my husband, our two children and our labradoodle, Murray. I enjoy visiting Wisconsin Northwoods to go hiking and enjoy nature. I am a huge Packer and Badger football fan, and love a football season filled with friends, laughs, and, of course, a Packer and Badger win!

Hi, I'm Sara, and I have been working at Hartstone Dental since April 2023. However, I have been a dental hygienist for 20 years! I enjoy taking care of patients and helping them maintain a happy and healthy smile. I like to think of every "cleaning" as a mouth makeover with happy smiles walking out the door and looking forward to returning. The patients and employees at Hartstone Dental have been very warm and welcoming to make the transition a great experience!
When I'm not at the office, you can find me with my husband, Jack, our two children, Rylan and Ella, and our black lab, Oakley. We like to keep busy watching the kids sporting events (it's so fun to watch them grow!) and enjoying time with family and friends. We also enjoy camping, boating and downhill skiing. I'm looking forward to getting to know the Hartstone Dental team and patients!

Hi, I’m Kayla! I joined the Hartstone team in 2017. Prior to working at Hartstone, I worked for 15 years at the Cross Plains Pharmacy as a pharmacy technician. I have always loved working one-on-one with patients so when I started here, I knew I would love it! I truly value the relationships I have made with my co-workers and consider them some of my closest friends. The doctors are pretty great too! You will find me at the front desk doing anything from scheduling appointments, discussing treatment plan estimates/financials and helping to navigate the tricky dental insurance world to our patients. You will also see me in the office working on the business side of things.
When I am not at work, I stay busy raising my daughter Everly. We love visting parks, going on ice cream dates and doing anything a child loves to do. I have a huge passion for cooking and meal prepping so you will find me in the kitchen often. Fitness and health are very important to me so I spend a lot of time working out and being outdoors as much as I can. I love to go camping, visit food and drink festivals, being on the lake at my aunt and uncles cabin and spending as much time with my daughter as I can.

Hi, I'm Karen. I started working as a dental receptionist in December 2023 and joined the Hartstone Dental team in August 2024. I enjoy greeting our patients with a big smile. One of the things I enjoy the most is helping out our Spanish speaking patients and making communication easier for both the patient and doctors. I enjoy working and bonding with my co-workers. I am proud to say that I love my job.
When I'm not in the office, you can find me with my boyfriend, Lino and my yorkie, Daisy. I enjoy shopping, making eternal bouquets, meal prepping, and enjoying nature. Lino and I have recently started our fitness journey and we enjoy seeing our progress. It's amazing what you can accomplish when you set your mind to it!

Hi, I’m Krystan. I joined the Hartstone Dental team in 2022. I am grateful to be working with amazing co-workers and creating the relationships I have made since starting here. As a front desk team member, I help schedule patient appointments, as well as helping with billing and insurance. I enjoy working with our patients as I greet them and help them with any questions they may have.
Some things I enjoy doing outside of the office include reading books, being outdoors and working on my craft projects. What I like most about crafting is making cards for kids in the hospital, as well as for friends and family.
